Media Release

New Fire Code Inspections & Fees

The Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code inspections took effect July 1, 2016 for all commercial and public buildings within the Town of Abingdon, VA. The purpose of these prevention codes is to provide statewide standards to safeguard life and property from the hazards of fire and explosion. These hazards arise from improper maintenance of safety and fire prevention materials, systems and structures, and the unsafe storage of substances, including explosives and blasting agents. The prevention codes provide administration the right to enforce these regulations and safeguard the value of property and life. Also, the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Codes establish regulations for obtaining permits for the manufacturing, storage, handling, use, or sale of explosives.
