Visitors Center Update 6-3-21

TOWN OF ABINGDON

133 WEST MAIN STREET · P. O. BOX 789 · ABINGDON, VIRGINIA · 24212

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 3, 2021

Visitors Center Update

Over the past few months, there have been lots of questions regarding the future of the tourism department and the location of the Visitors Center. The town is committed to promoting tourism, having a viable Visitors Center, and continuing to promote all the assets this town has to offer tourists and the community.

There has been some misinformation spread about the future of the Visitors Center with the sale of the Hassinger House. Over the past few years, the Town of Abingdon has been stabilizing the Fields-Penn House, and doing work on the inside and outside to update this historic property to be the Visitors Center. We hope to be moved into the Fields-Penn House, located at 208 West Main Street, by the beginning of 2022.

The main floor will be a dedicated Visitors Center with brochures, historic artifacts from the Civil War period when the house was built, and staff to help direct people through Abingdon. The second floor will provide office space for Town employees and/or other organizations.

We feel the location of the Fields-Penn House is a great place for a Visitors Center. Located right downtown with ample parking, easy access, and great visibility. The lawn of the house can be used for artisan displays, buskers, music, or events. The Town is excited about this project and sees lots of possibilities.

Until the Fields-Penn House is finished, remember we are offering visitor information at 300 Green Spring Road, at the VA Creeper Trailhead, and if you need anything call 276-676-2282 or visit our website- www.visitabingdonvirginia.com.
