Upcoming Tree Removal on Town Property or Public Right-Of-Way

The Town of Abingdon has received several inquiries about upcoming tree removals located on Town property or public right-of-way.

The following is background information on these trees:

·       Sycamore Trees (3), east side of Court Street, from Plumb Alley to Main Street – The root systems on these trees have lifted and broken surrounding sidewalk, curb and gutter, and street pavement. This has created pedestrian safety issues, affected storm drainage, and resulted in the uneven pavement in the parking lane. As the trees continue to grow, the damage will spread, and they also become a damage risk to the adjacent buildings. We are considering new configurations of sidewalk and space for trees and vegetation, possibly including widened sidewalk, tree plantings between parking spaces, or a vegetated median.

·       Sycamore Tree, at Town Creek crossing, Walden Road and Valley Street “S-curve” – The trunk of this tree is partially obstructing the flow through the stormwater pipes under the pavement. We need to have full capacity in these pipes to carry Town Creek, especially during large rain events.

·       Hemlock Tree – Fields Penn House – This tree, on the west side of the house, was crowded out in its growth by larger adjacent trees. The tree grew to lean directly toward the house. Given the significant investment in restoration at Fields-Penn and the fragility of Hemlock trees, we think it is in the best interest of the Town to remove this tree.

These matters were discussed at the October and November Abingdon Tree Commission meetings. The mission of the Abingdon Tree Commission is to promote a safe and healthy urban forest in Abingdon through the planting, care, and management of site-appropriate trees on Town property and rights-of-way and to provide resources and advice to Town residents on the care and management of their trees. For anyone interested in attending these meetings, they are usually held on the third Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall. You may also contact the Public Works Department or Town Arborist at 276-628-3167.

Keep Your Lights Up for Healthcare Workers

TOWN OF ABINGDON

133 WEST MAIN STREET · P. O. BOX 789 · ABINGDON, VIRGINIA · 24212

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 6, 2021

Keep Your Lights Up for Healthcare Workers

The Town of Abingdon, Virginia is pleased to join in the national campaign #LightsUp4Heroes. We encourage everyone to “Keep Your Lights Up for Healthcare Workers” until January 31, 2021. After nine months of fighting COVID-19, healthcare workers are feeling exhausted and are needing support more than ever. The twinkling of holiday lights provides everyone with an emotional boost, and these lights have become a sign of hope and normalcy. By leaving these lights up, it is a way to say thank you to those who work in the healthcare profession, and an easy way to help.

“This national campaign ties in with the Apricot Ribbon Campaign, and shows that our community is willing to support our healthcare workers,” said Mayor Derek Webb. “The Town of Abingdon will leave holiday lighting up on Main Street through January in hopes that we can boost the spirits of our regional healthcare workers while they fight the COVID-19 battle.”

We are asking citizens, businesses, and the community to do the following to show support:

1.     Keep your holiday lights up until January 31, 2021.

2.     Help spread this message by sharing photos of your holiday lights throughout January on social media with the hashtag- #LightsUp4Heroes, and tag a healthcare worker or facility to say thank you.

3.     Continue to thank our healthcare workers for all they are doing to end this pandemic.

“As we continue to combat COVID-19, it is so encouraging to see the outpouring of support from our community for our healthcare professionals,” says Johnston Memorial Hospital Chief Executive Officer, John Jeter. “Together, we are doing everything possible to slow the spread of this virus amidst unprecedented challenges, and the continued support from our community helps to motivate our team every day. We will continue to help our community navigate the COVID-19 situation as safely as possible. We will get through this together.”

Another way to do your part and show support for healthcare workers, remember to wash your hands, wear a mask, and social distance.
