THE
MARTHA WASHINGTON INN & SPA ANNOUNCES A SPECIAL EXHIBIT:
“MINIATURES
AT THE MARTHA,” OPEN TO THE PUBLIC THIS JUNE
Abingdon,
VA – The Martha Washington Inn & Spa invites the public to view “Miniatures
at The Martha,” a special exhibit of hand-crafted dollhouses, on display June
1-30, 2019. The thirteen dollhouses featured were built by Asheville
artist Sally Habermeyer for her own private collection, and have never before
been displayed to the public. The exhibit will be located in the East
Parlor of the Inn, and open daily from 2pm to 7pm.
Each
of the 13 dollhouses on display is hand-constructed and decorated, with an
astounding level of detail, including working electric lights, needlepointed
carpets and wall hangings, and custom furniture pieces. The houses include a
Christmas-themed house, a [fill in the blank], and a Tudor design inspired by
the artist’s own home in Asheville, NC.
For
dollhouse constructor Sally Habermeyer, these one-of-a-kind creations are a
labor of love. “As the mother of two boys, I was not interested in dollhouses
until after my first granddaughter was born,” says Habermeyer. Since that time,
she has constructed over 20 houses, as well as “rehabbing” dollhouses for
select friends and clients.
The
exhibit is free to view, but The Martha is encouraging the public to make a
donation at the door to benefit Washington County Virginia Habitat for
Humanity. As an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, WCHFH
provides the community with hope for the future. Putting faith in to action by
helping build, renovate and educate partner families to become financially
stable and independent homeowners. WCHFH has been leading the community for 20
years in promoting the understanding of housing as a critical foundation for
breaking the cycle of poverty.
Adds
Chris Lowe, General Manager of The Martha, “This is a great partnership for all
involved and we are excited that The Inn was chosen to showcase this remarkable
exhibit.”
In
addition to the exhibit, open daily from 2:00pm to 7:00pm, The Martha
Washington Inn & Spa is offering a special high tea on Saturdays and
Sundays {add the time here} during the month of June. Guests and members
of the public can enjoy a refined tea service, including sweet and savory
goodies, while they explore the dollhouse collection. Perfect for girlfriend
getaways and mother-daughter outings. Reservations required.

Virginia – The Crooked
Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail presents Gate 10 in concert on Thursday,
May 9th from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Southwest Virginia Cultural
Center & Marketplace (formerly Heartwood) in Abingdon, VA. This concert is
part of The Crooked Road Music Series.
Gate 10 is a high energy band from
the New River Valley of Virginia. They have found their way by performing
traditional bluegrass, gospel and country music along with original music. Gate
10 is excited to travel this musical journey with a hard driving, solid style,
but one that is firmly rooted in traditions with their own innovative sound. A
true style of their own makes them a highly entertaining group to watch. Their
stage presence is beyond their young years with their musicianship, vocals, and
harmonies.
The Crooked Road Music Series takes place each Thursday at the SWVA Cultural Center & Marketplace. Visit the SWVA Cultural Center & Marketplace and experience Southwest Virginia's creative and authentic culture. Located off I-81 at Exit 14 in Abingdon, VA, the Cultural Center features youth artists each 2nd Thursday along with open jams on the 1st, 3rd, 4th (and 5th) Thursdays to showcase Southwest Virginia performers.
As part of The
Crooked Road's Thursday night live music, the SWVA Cultural Center &
Marketplace Cafe features a SWVA Patty Melt or Soup Beans &
Cornbread. Admission to the concert is free and donations will be accepted
for Crooked Road Traditional Music Education Program (TMEP).
The flavors of
the Southwest Virginia Cultural Center & Marketplace are nothing short of
inspiring. From the sounds of the region’s distinctive heritage music to the
sights of world renowned folk artists from around the mountains, you’ll find

8th Annual
Crooked Road Youth Music Festival Announced
Abingdon, VA – Youth musicians from throughout
Southwest Virginia will be featured at the 8th Annual Crooked Road
Youth Music Festival on Saturday, May 11th from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00
p.m. at the Southwest Virginia Cultural Center & Marketplace (formerly
Heartwood) in Abingdon. Fifteen bands and traditional music programs (ca. 200
youth musicians) will perform throughout the day.
The festival
will highlight regional traditional music programs including Bland County High
School Old Time String Band, Bristol Bearcat Bluegrass Band, Floyd JAMS, Galax
JAMS, Grayson Highlands String Band, HendersonJAM, Miss Ellie String Band,
Montgomery County JAM, New River JAM Band, Scott County JAMS, VHCC Old Time
String Band, WiseJAMS–Big Stone Gap, and WiseJAMS–Wise. Additional performers
include Adam McPeak & Mountain Thunder and the Kempa Sisters.
The Crooked
Road Youth Music Festival is sponsored by the Town of Abingdon, National
Endowment for the Arts, Ratcliffe Foundation, Southwest Virginia Cultural
Center & Marketplace, Tazewell Music Club, Virginia Commission for the
Arts, Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, and the Wayne
C. Henderson Scholarship Program.
The Southwest
Virginia Cultural Center & Marketplace is located off I-81 at Exit 14 in
Abingdon, VA. Admission to the festival is $5.00 for adults, $2.00 for children
6-12, and kids 5 and under are free.
