NOTICE OF PLANNING COMMISSION MEETING 6-27-16
TOWN OF ABINGDON

MEETING NOTICE
On Monday, June 27, 2016, the Town
of Abingdon Planning Commission will meet at 5:30 PM in the Council Chambers at
the Municipal Building (133 West Main Street, Abingdon). At the meeting,
members of the commission will vote on a request for a Certificate of
Appropriateness (COA) for the site development at/near 440 Green Spring Road,
Abingdon.
Per the Code of the Town of
Abingdon, this meeting will not include a public hearing on this component. The
public is encouraged to review the detailed agenda packet at http://abingdon-va.gov/?page_id=154 and citizens wishing to make comments or who have
questions may contact the applicant listed on the notice or the Planning
Department at 276-628-3167 prior to the meeting on June 27, 2016.

Independence Day Extravaganza 7-2-16
Monday,
July 4, 2016, the Coomes Center Outdoor Pool will be OPEN from 12pm-6pm,
Cost $3.00 per person. There will be a DJ playing music from the pool deck and
a food vendor onsite. The gym, indoor pool, and main facility will be CLOSED
for the day.
There
will be NO fireworks show at the Coomes Center on July 4, 2016. All festivities
and fireworks have been moved to the Abingdon Market Pavilion (100 Remsburg
Drive) on Saturday, July 2, 2016, beginning at 4:00 pm with fireworks at 9:20
pm.

ABINGDON RAKES IN 30 IN THIRTY
ABINGDON RAKES IN 30 IN THIRTY
Sustain Abingdon has been awarded a 30
in Thirty Grant of $500 in the Beautification category. Sustain Abingdon is
planning a Community Garden project, consisting of
twenty plots that will be available to the general public. The plot size will
be 20’x20′. Sustain Abingdon will prepare the plots and provide water for the
plants as needed. The plants that are grown will be limited to vegetables only.
The goal is to provide gardening opportunities to those in the community who
might not otherwise be able to have a vegetable garden. 30 in Thirty funds
awarded by Keep Virginia Beautiful will be used to help prepare the sites for
planting, and to educate residents about the community garden. Sustain Abingdon
will measure the number of plots leased, number of participants, and the types
of vegetables grown.
Government, non-profit, civic and service organizations in
Virginia were invited to apply for 30 in Thirty Grants for $500 to $1,000
telling how they are addressing these pressing issues: Litter Prevention, Recycling,
Cigarette Litter Prevention, and Community Beautification. Since 2011, Keep
Virginia Beautiful has provided over $110,000 to 140 organizations throughout
the state. This year, for the first time, we are awarding 45 grants because of
the generosity of our partners at Altria, Keep America Beautiful, WestRock
Foundation and Trex.

Ratliff Wins Award for Innovation in Government

Award for Innovation in Government
Sandy
Ratliff, business development specialist for Virginia Department of Small
Business and Supplier Diversity won the award for Innovation in Government for
her role in live streaming and archiving the Noon Knowledge educational series,
a free weekly educational workshop developed through a partnership between
VDSBSD, Virginia Highlands Small Business Incubator, and Washington County
Chamber of Commerce. Also, a winner at the Southwest Virginia Technology
Council Awards was Virginia Highlands Small Business Incubator tenant Lab
Optical for his role in small business innovation.
The
Virginia Highlands Small Business Incubator is an economic development facility
whose mission is to foster small business development and growth in the
Abingdon and Washington County area.
