Interstate 81 Exit 19 southbound on ramp closed two weekends in August due to bridge work Traffic from Damascus side of interstate impacted by closure

BRISTOL – Due to bridge work on Interstate 81 at exit 19 in Abingdon (Washington County), the southbound Interstate 81 on ramp accessible from the Damascus side of the interstate will be closed two upcoming weekends in August. The closure will be August 2-4 and 23-25 from 7 p.m. Fridays until 6 a.m. Mondays. The closures are necessary to ensure safety while a portion of the current bridge deck is removed using hydrodemolition, a technique that uses high-pressure water to remove concrete. Motorists traveling on Route 11/58 from Damascus can use I-81 northbound to exit 22 to access southbound I-81. Use caution in this area and pay close attention to signs and message boards. The project, which involves replacing the bridge deck and adding an epoxy overlay, is scheduled to be finished March 2020. Sewer line replacement & upgrade @ Cook Street and Oakland Street.

Public Notice: Sewer line Replacement at Oakland Street and Cook Street, August 12, 2019.

The Town of Abingdon Collections Department, will be replacing and upgrading the main sewer line crossing the intersection at Cook Street and Oakland Street the week of August 12, 2019. The intersection of Cook Street and Oakland Street will be closed to thru traffic starting at 7:30 am to 3:30 pm. The Collection Department advises the public to please find an alternate route to Lowry Drive from Cook Street.

Lowry Drive traffic will be detoured at intersection of Oakland Street North on Oakland Street to Bradley Street. The project is estimated to take two days before completion.

Homeowners on Oakland Street will have excess from Lowry Drive, at Oakland Street intersection.

Abingdon’s Town Wide Yard Sale

8.2 miles of trash to treasure for you to discover

          The Town of Abingdon will host the second annual Town-wide yard sale on Saturday, September 14, 2019 from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm.   Residents are encouraged to sell their goods in a yard sale type setting on private property only. No commercial vendors allowed.

          The Town’s participation will be limited to waiving permit fees and coordinating a list of participating residents for marketing purposes via the town website and “Abingdon’s Town Wide Yard Sale” Facebook event.

          To participate and be included in the marketing, you must complete a permit in person or print online at https://bit.ly/2LbXSoQ and return to the Town Municipal Building and/or emailing ttriplett@abingdon-va.gov by 5:00 pm Friday, August 30, 2019.      

          We expect an increase in vehicle and pedestrian traffic for this event, please plan accordingly, and be alert for pedestrians.

[ABINGDON, VIRGINIA] 17 JULY 2019 - Come enjoy some locally sourced breakfast AT THE ABINGDON FARMERS MARKET, SATURDAY JULY 20, 2019 FROM 8:00 a.m. to 10:00a.m.  Pancakes, Scrambled eggs and bacon PLUS The Dawson Family providing musical entertainment. You can purchase a ticket on the day of the breakfast or before by stopping at the information table. Tickets are $12 each.

The Abingdon Farmers Market is a producer only market that is managed by a Steering Committee made up of vendors from the market and AT-LARGE community members.  The AFM is often ranked as one of the best markets in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

This fundraising event will provide additional resources for the AFM for additional programing such as live music, cooking demonstrations and our FARM FRESH KIDS programming.  Farm Fresh Kids is an incentive program about healthy eating and active living, giving kids the power to decide what foods to buy and consume. It was created by the Abingdon Farmers Market to incentivize children to increase their consumption of fresh produce, in addition to receiving nutritional and physical education lessons from different community groups.

Today, the Abingdon Farmers Market has established itself as not just a consistent source of high-quality, locally-grown food, but also as a fixture of a community re-connecting to its deep agricultural roots.  Your support will sustain our Farmers Market.
