Town Creek Flood Mitigation Study

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Town Creek Flood Mitigation Study

The Town of Abingdon is conducting a flood mitigation study of Town Creek. The purpose of the study is to assess and identify flood problem areas within the watershed along Town Creek to make informed recommendations for mitigating flooding conditions.  The recommendations from the study are a necessary first step in future grant opportunities with FEMA and other State agencies.

The study area extends approximately 3.33 miles beginning from Town Creek northwest of the Walden Road and Branch Street intersection down to the confluence of Town Creek with Wolf Creek north of Vances Mill Road.

Recently, the Town mailed property owners within the study area a postcard with a right to entry agreement. We ask that the pre-paid postcards be signed and returned so that a representative can conduct activities along the appropriate areas. The Permission to Enter Property postcard is requested to be returned within 10 days of receipt.

To help inform the Town on further issues with Town Creek, we are asking for public input. If you have photos, videos, etc. of flooding, you can email them to towncreek@abingdon-va.gov or contact Heagon Gill, Engineering Tech, at 276-628-3167. All public input will be accepted until November 29, 2021.
